• Hannah Fry is a mathematician. She holds a PhD in fluid-dynamics, has worked in motor sports as an aerodynamicist and now teaches at University College London. Her research focus is on the London riots of 2011.

  • The hallmark of design research is an elegant theory and participative praxis that factors in the person and thereby serves the networked society. But how do we do this and how do we want to communicate and interact with one another in the future?

Homo sapiens will survive the next mass extinction -- it's just a matter of how we'll do it.

Scientific data, in the natural sciences but also in the humanities, is almost always related to space and thus its representation on maps in the Web is obvious and comes with several advantages. Especially open raw data, such as voluntereed geographic information or citizens’ observations can be used for further scientific studies and analysis. That's why maps are the perfect mean of communication from science to society and from society to science.

Data Visualisations, ranging from simple bar charts to convoluted InfoViz, are now par for the course in popular scientific communication. However, best practices often default to the simplest option available in restrictive software packages. This session will introduce the audience to the Grammar of Graphics plotting concept in R, allowing creative processes to merge with efficient, reproducible, and transparent code.
  • In line with the Science Lab @ re:publica, hosted in co-operation with the Wissenschaftsjahr 2014, a Youth Science Hack Day will take place on the weekend prior to #rp14.

  • The 2014 Year of Science - Digital Society has teamed up with re:publica. We are pleased to engage with the framework by presenting Science Lab: An Open Science - Sub-conference and the Youth Science Hack Day. The Call for Papers for the sub-conference starts today.

  • If we knew that the world was going to end tomorrow, would we still be starting new blogs today? The glaciers are merrily melting away, rising sea levels are splashing at our feet and global environmental pollution is taking on an ever greater magnitude.

Shadow libraries host millions of (scientific) books and tens of millions of journal articles. How do they operate? What do they offer? Who uses them? For what reasons? Come and see how pirate libraries that cost less than 2000 USD/year may shape the future of libraries.
